ABOUT THE SERIES

"Lighting the Future: Refugee Conversations" is an interview series from Elena's Light that features speakers who are from different backgrounds but who all speak on a common theme: the refugee experience. Inspired by the refugee journey of our own founder and executive director, Fereshteh Ganjavi, the series aims to shed light on refugee experiences and narratives across an array of fields, from art to academia and more.

In our inaugural event, we spoke with artist Edel Rodriguez. Watch the conversation here. For the second event in the series, join us in a Zoom conversation on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at 7pm (EST), with Asma Rahimyar, the daughter of Afghan refugees and the first Rhodes Scholar from Southern Connecticut State University.

For this special event, we will not be charging for tickets, but we ask that you please consider donating to our Global Giving fundraiser!

OUR FEATURED SPEAKER:

ASMA RAHIMYAR

As the daughter of Afghan immigrants, Asma is attuned to the corrosive effects of impunity—her aspirations, therefore, revolve around the imperative of prioritizing human rights within transitional justice initiatives. Asma is currently pursuing a double baccalaureate in political science and philosophy, as well as a minor in English literature, at Southern Connecticut State University. She is the first Rhodes Scholar, as well as the first Truman Scholar, in both Southern and CSCU (Connecticut State Colleges and Universities) history.
